Out of Bath

Out Of Bath: An Exhibition of Ceramics by Bath School of Art and Design Alumni.
It came as a shock to both staff and students when it was announced in 2009 that Bath Spa University’s long running specialist Ceramics degree would close. As one of the last students on the course I felt compelled to draw attention to this sad loss and to celebrate the achievements of the department, so when the opportunity arose to organise this exhibition I was keen to take it.
Out of Bath showcases the work of a diverse group of makers who all trained at Bath School of Art and Design and have all become successful ceramists. They are now at different stages of their careers and the exhibition covers a wide variety of practices and approaches. Some have made exciting new works for the show and the ceramics featured range from functional to sculptural, figurative to decorative and installation to conceptual.
The degree course has a long history beginning in 1965 at Bath Academy of Arts. With such a huge number of past students to choose from the selection process was difficult. I have attempted to show a broad a range of work that brings an exciting, fresh and contemporary approach to the discipline. Inevitably the selection also reflects my own interests to some extent.
Out of Bath includes work by Felicity Aylieff, Matt Chambers, Jo Davies, Hannah Dipper, Aimee Lax, Chun Liao, Babette Martini, Heidi Parsons, Louisa Taylor, Patricia Volk, Jonathan Wade, Sasha Wardell.
